Every year on June 5, the world comes together to celebrate World Environment Day, a global movement led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). In 2025, the focus is a pressing and universal crisis: Ending Plastic Pollution. Under the powerful campaign theme #BeatPlasticPollution, this year’s call to action highlights the urgent need to address one of the planet’s most pervasive environmental threats.
From microplastics polluting the air we breathe, to plastic waste disrupting ecosystems and endangering wildlife- plastic pollution is a crisis we can no longer ignore. As plastic seeps into our food chains, water systems, and soil, the consequences are far-reaching and severe.
At Rajpath Infracon, we recognize that this is not a distant issue. As a leader in infrastructure development across India, we believe that growth and environmental stewardship must go hand in hand. Our vision is rooted in the idea that infrastructure and nature are not adversaries but they are allies when approached with responsibility and foresight.
A Sustainable Approach to Infrastructure
Plastic has found its way into every aspect of modern construction and convenience, but at Rajpath Infracon, we have proactively embraced a philosophy of reducing, replacing, and rethinking plastic use within our operations.
Our projects extend beyond roads and bridges and encompass the restoration and preservation of ecosystems. In fact, we have consistently gone beyond mandated environmental obligations to implement meaningful green initiatives on the ground. A prime example is our massive plantation project along NH-6 (Amravati to Akola), where we are planting 17,450 trees across 56 kilometres of highway. This initiative is not just about quantity but it is rooted in quality, sustainability, and long-term care.
Our Three-Tier Plantation Model:
1. Flowering Trees (e.g., Gulmohar, Bahava)- to enhance visual appeal and attract pollinators
2. Large Shade Trees (e.g., Banyan, Mango)- to offer shelter and improve microclimates
3. Fast-growing Bamboo- to support biodiversity, prevent soil erosion, and stabilize the ecosystem
Median landscaping features native, low-maintenance flowering plants and shrubs to further beautify and balance the environment.
Planting with Purpose: Beyond Mandates
As per NHAI’s 2015 mandate for highway greening, compensatory plantations are required for trees lost during road construction. But at Rajpath Infracon, our commitment begins before the obligation. During the ongoing highway work, 1,000 trees were planted proactively, ahead of project deadlines, reaffirming our environmental ethos.
Our Guinness World Record initiative in 2022, where we undertook 108 hours of nonstop asphalting, was also complemented by a major plantation drive at the Mana campsite, demonstrating that speed and sustainability can coexist. Our green efforts are not limited to new plantations. As part of the ADB EPC-10 project, our team worked meticulously to preserve 192 mature trees out of 494 impacted during road redevelopment. Key species such as Banyan (Ficus indica), Peepal (Ficus religiosa), Neem (Azadirachta indica), and Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) were carefully conserved, reflecting our thoughtful and balanced approach to infrastructure.
Taking inspiration from MoRTH Minister Nitin Gadkari’s visionary idea, Rajpath Infracon constructed 34 large farm ponds along the highway in partnership with Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapith, Akola. These ponds not only help conserve water but also support agricultural irrigation, creating a ripple effect of environmental and social benefits in surrounding communities.
Chairman Mr. Jagdish Kadam has made it clear that our environmental vision is not just a compliance checklist, but a deep-seated philosophy that shapes every decision. From early plantations to biodiversity conservation and sustainable road-building techniques, our mission is to be an agent of positive change.
Some efforts may go unseen, but their impact speaks volumes. At Rajpath Infracon, we believe these stories of conscious and responsible development deserve the spotlight. On this World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to building not just roads, but a greener future for generations to come.
Let’s pledge to beat plastic pollution and grow green together. #BeatPlasticPollution #WorldEnvironmentDay #RajpathGreenInitiative #SustainableInfrastructure
